sea と ocean の違いとは？
海を表す英単語には sea と ocean があります。この２つはどのように使い分けたらよいのでしょう？
辞書の訳語を見ると、sea は「海」、ocean は「海洋、大洋」と出ていることが多いため、 ocean には広い海というイメージがあります。
しかし考えてみると、海は広いのが当たり前。わざわざ広い海という単語があるのもおかしな気がしませんか。

sea はゲルマン語系統の単語。一方の ocean はギリシア語に由来します。
オーストラリアやニュージーランドのあるオセアニア（Oceania）という州名も ocean と同じく古代ギリシア語の okeanos に由来する単語です。
イギリス英語？アメリカ英語？
sea と ocean の語義を改めて辞書で調べてみました。OALD を見ると、sea の冒頭には BrE（イギリス英語）と書いてあります。
