英語の前置詞というのは、いったい全部でいくつあるのか？
素朴な疑問が一つ。
英語の前置詞というのは、いったい全部でいくつあるのでしょう？
すぐに思い浮かぶものは、about, at, by, for, from, in, of, on, to, with といったあたりでしょうか。
しかし使用頻度の低い単語も含めれば、おそらく30くらいはあるのでは？と想像します。
あちこち調べていたら、Wikipedia の中に「List of English preposition」というページを見つけました。

もっとも半分以上は聞いたこともない単語ですが。。。
せっかくなので、いくつかの単語を拾って、意味を紹介してみたいと思います。
astride
- with one’s legs on either side of
The boy sat astride his father’s knee.

astride は「またがって」を意味する前置詞。
馬術選手や競馬のジョッキーにとってはありがたい単語ですね！
circa
- approximately, about
Julius Caesar visited this area circa 50 BC.

circa は「およそ」を意味するラテン語由来の前置詞。
やはりカエサルが主人公となると、about では格好がつかないような気がします。
vis-à-vis
- in relation to; compared with
- opposite, across from, set so as to be facing
He was seated vis-à-vis the president.

vis-à-vis は「向かい合って」を意味するフランス語由来の前置詞。
この単語を使うと、相手が大統領であっても対等な感じがするのは不思議。
毎年のように新語が生まれる英語の世界においても、前置詞というのは新規参入が難しいジャンル。
少なくとも記憶する限り、前置詞の新語というのは聞いたことがありません。
それだけに今ある前置詞の一つ一つが、とても貴重なものに感じられます。
