see-saw & teeter-totter

公園などでよく見かけるシーソー（see-saw）。

この see-saw という単語の語源には諸説あるようですが、その一つは「のこぎり」の saw から来ているというもの。

saw

a tool that has a long blade with sharp points (called teeth) along one of its edges.

シーソーに乗った二人の動きが、二人の人間がのこぎりの両端を持って丸太を切るときの動きに似ているので、そのように名付けられたのだとか。

考えたこともありませんでしたが、言われてみれば確かに似ているのかもしれません。

ところでこの see-saw というのはいわゆるイギリス英語。

北米では teeter-totter という名前で呼ぶことが多いようです。teeter-totter の totter は「よろめく」の意味。

まじめにのこぎりで丸太を切るイギリスと、酔っ払ってよろめくアメリカ。

この対比が何だか面白いなと思いました。
