よーく見ると ultimate に［pen-］という接頭辞（？）らしきものが付いた形になっています。

penultimate の［pen-］は almost を意味するラテン語 paene に由来するとのこと。
これは珍しい接頭辞だなと思ったので、もっと私たちに馴染みのある英単語に使われている例はないだろうか？と探してみたところ、一つ見つけることができました。

そう「半島」を意味する peninsula です。
英語の peninsula はもともと almost＋island という成り立ちなんですね。日本語の半島と発想は似ています。
