water under the bridge（橋の下の水）

デール・カーネギーの『人を動かす』の原書『How to Win Friends and Influence People』を読んでいて見つけた、ちょっと面白いイディオムを一つ紹介してみたいと思います。

南北戦争の際、合衆国大統領のリンカーンは指揮官のジョージ・ミード（George Gordon Meade）に、撤退する敵軍追撃の指示を出しますが、ミードは攻撃を躊躇し、敵軍の撤退を許してしまいます。

一度はミードへの怒りの手紙を書いたリンカーンでしたが、結局、その手紙は投函しませんでした。

著者のカーネギーがその時のリンカーンの胸中を推測して書いたのが次のシーン。リンカーンは「自分がミードの立場にいたらどうしていただろう？」と想像し、最後に Anyhow, it is water under the bridge now. という一文でその思索を締めくくっています。

Maybe I ought not to be so hasty. It is easy enough for me to sit here in the quiet of the White House and order Meade to attack; but if I had been up at Gettysburg, and if I had seen as much blood as Meade has seen during the last week, and if my ears had been pierced with the screams and shrieks of the wounded and dying, maybe I wouldn’t be so anxious to attack either. If I had Meade’s timid temperament, perhaps I would have done just what he had done. Anyhow, it is water under the bridge now.

この water under the bridge というフレーズの意味がわからなかったので辞書で調べてみました。

water under the bridge

Used to refer to events that are in the past and consequently no longer to be regarded as important.

「Oxford Dictionaries」

water under the bridge は過去の出来事を指して「今さら仕方のないことだ」という諦観を表現するためのイディオム。

どんな出来事も川の水のように過ぎ去ってしまい、誰もその流れを戻すことはできないというニュアンスなのでしょう。詩的で使ってみたくなる表現です。

北米版の water over the dam も同じことを言っている（ダムを越えた水を戻すことはできない）のでしょうが、ダムというのはやや詩情に欠けるような気も。個人的には water under the bridge の方が好みですね。
