mansplain − Macquarie Dictionary Word of the Year 2014
以前の記事で2014年の Oxford Dictionaries Word of the Year に vape という単語が選ばれたという話題を紹介しました。

そして今回紹介するのは2014年の Macquarie Dictionary Word of the Year。
Macquarie Dictionary？ 聞いたことがないなあ。。。という人もいるでしょう。
Macquarie Dictionary というのは Made in Australia の英語辞書。
オーストラリアの書店の辞書コーナーに行くと、大抵 Oxford や Longman など英米の有名ブランドと並べて置いてあるのを見ることができます。
さて、今回の投票では有識者の投票による Committee’s Choice winner と一般の投票による People’s Choice winner という二つのカテゴリーで単語が選ばれました。
今回面白い単語だなあと思ったのは Committee’s Choice winner に選ばれた mansplain という単語。
mansplain
verb (t) Colloquial (humorous) (of a man) to explain (something) to a woman, in a way that is patronising because it assumes that a woman will be ignorant of the subject matter.

mansplain というのは「男性が女性に話をするときに、女性がその話題には無知であると推測し、見下した感じで説明をする」の意味。
それだけのニュアンスが man と explain の合成語である mansplain 一語の中に込められているんですね。
まあ男性的には「ひえー」という単語ではあるのですが、男女間コミュニケーションの一つの側面を的確にとらえた面白い表現だと思いました。
