Watergate, Russiagate
アメリカのトランプ大統領が連邦捜査局（FBI）のコミー長官を解任したニュースが各媒体で大きく報じられています。
焦点はFBIが捜査をすすめている昨年のアメリカ大統領選挙へのロシアの介入疑惑。
場合によっては、今回の解任劇が第二のウォーターゲート事件（Watergate scandal）につながるのではないかと危惧されています。
Watergate

A US political scandal in which an attempt in 1972 to bug the national headquarters of the Democratic Party (in the Watergate building in Washington DC) led to the resignation of President Nixon (1974).
Watergate scandal は1972年のアメリカ民主党本部盗聴事件に端を発する一連の政治スキャンダル。結果として当時のニクソン大統領は辞任に追い込まれました。
この事件のインパクトがあまりに強かったせいか、Watergate の［-gate］はその後、疑惑やスキャンダルを意味する接尾辞として使われるようになります。

‘Irangate’
上記用例に出ている Irangate というのはレーガン大統領時代にイランへの兵器売却で得た利益をニカラグアの反共ゲリラの援助に使っていた事件とのこと。
Oxford English Dictionary（OED）によると、この［-gate］には場所の名前が付いたものと人や組織の名前が付いたものがあるそうです。
- The name of the place where such a scandal (allegedly) occurred, or that of a place in some way associated with the scandal, as Dallasgate, Hollywoodgate, Irangate, Koreagate, etc.
- The proper name, nickname, etc., of a person or organization implicated in the scandal, as Billygate, Floodgate, Totegate, etc.
この分類によれば、さきほどの Irangate や Russiagate は「場所の名前＋ gate」なので前者のグループに入ります。
あるいは後者の「人の名前＋ gate」というパターンに沿って、これから Trumpgate のような表現が広まることもあるのでしょうか？
