I go to school by bus.
I go to school by train.

In some common fixed expressions to do with place, time and movement, normally countable nouns are treated as uncountables, without articles. Examples are:

by car / bus / bicycle / plane / train / tube / boat

「Practical English Usage」

I go to school by tube.

the Tube

British trademark

The underground railway system in London:

‘a cross-London trek on the Tube’

Oxford Dictionaries

Australian informal

A can of beer:

‘a tube of lager’

Oxford Dictionaries

North American informal

Television:

‘watching the tube in a country bar’

Oxford Dictionaries
