音楽の楽しみ方は人それぞれ。
listen to music は「聞く」。
play music は「演奏する」。
make music は「作る」。
しかし face the music となるとちょっと意味が異なるようです。
face the music

face the music は「報いを受ける」という意味のイディオム。
それにしてもなぜ「音楽に向き合う」ことがそのような意味につながるのでしょう？
Wiktionary には次のような語源説が書かれていました。
Origin unclear. It may be from either the theater or the military. Either facing literal music: as the performers on the stage are facing the music from the orchestra pit when confronting a possibly hostile audience; or a soldier is facing the military band at a dressing-down ceremony; or the music is by grim humor a euphemism for the noise of battle.

これによると、Origin unclear（由来ははっきりしない）という前書きの後に、
- 舞台役者が、厳しい観客の目に晒される際、（舞台と客席の間にある）オーケストラピットから流れる音楽に向き合わなければならないから。
- 兵士が、降格のセレモニーの際、軍楽隊の音楽に向き合わなければならないから。
- 音楽は戦場の騒音の婉曲表現である。
という三つの説が提示されています。
いずれにせよ、一般には心地よいものを連想する music という単語が、現実の厳しさの比喩として使われているのは面白いことだなと思います。
