quincunx

Oxford Dictionaries の「TRENDING WORDS」で昨日こんな単語が一位になっていました。

quincunx

quincunx は「五点形」の意味。つまりさいころの5の目のようなドットを意味する単語なのだそう。

そんなものを指す固有の単語があるということ自体が驚きです。

どんな語源があるのか Online Etymology Dictionary を調べてみました。

quincunx (n.)

1640s, originally astrological, of planetary alignments, from Latin, literally “five twelfths” (especially “five unciae,” that is, “five-twelfths of an as,” the basic unit of Roman currency), from quinque “five” (from PIE root *penkwe- “five”) + uncia “ounce; a twelfth part (of anything),” related to unus “one” (from PIE root *oi-no- “one, unique”)…

「Online Etymology Dictionary」

これによると、古代ローマにはアス(as)という貨幣単位があって、quincunx は12分の5アス貨幣を指す単語であったとのこと。

そんな中途半端な数字の貨幣があったというのは面白いですね。

では、なぜその quincunx が五点形を意味するようになったのでしょう?

Wikipedia に次のような記述がありました。

Its value was sometimes represented by a pattern of five dots arranged like the points of a die, so this pattern also came to be called quincunx.

Wikipedia「Quincunx」より

これによると、12分の5アスの貨幣価値を五点形の模様で表したことから、その模様を quincunx と呼ぶようになったとのこと。

さいころの5の目のようなドットにかつてはそんな意味があったんですね。

こんな風に思いがけないものに固有の名前が付いているのを知ると、つい嬉しくなって記録したくなってしまいます。
