小麦、米、トウモロコシと異なるオーツの特徴
このところ朝食によく食べているのはミューズリー。

一般的なミューズリーはオーツ（エンバク）にドライフルーツやナッツを加えたもの。
最近、このオーツには小麦、米、トウモロコシといった他の穀物とは決定的に異なる一つの特徴があることに気が付きました。
ちょっと長くなりますが、それぞれの辞書項目を確認してみましょう。

そう oats はこれらの中でただ一つ複数扱いの名詞なのです。
なぜ oats だけが他と異なる扱いなのでしょう？
？？
そういえば、以前のエントリーで corn の可算・不可算に関する内容を書いたことがありました。
ここで触れたのは、英語では粒々のコーンのみならず、軸付きのとうもろこしでさえも不可算名詞であるということ。
このような英語の感覚を不思議に思いつつ、そういう考え方をする言語なんだと自分を納得させていたのですが、今回思いがけず複数扱いの穀物を見つけてしまったので、ますますわからなくなってしまいました。
結局はこのような区分というのは「慣習」でしかないのでしょうか？
